Industry excursions

On Wednesday, 17th June the Mid-Congress field trips take place. Special industry excursion programme is available for all the delegates. The excursion programme offers parallel excursions for those who are interested in the horticultural or energy peat industry.

Industry excursions will concentrate mainly on the following Congress topics:

5.3 – PEAT EXTRACTION I 5.4 – UTILISATION OF PEAT I 5.5 – OTHER FORMS OF PEATLAND USE I 6.2 – RESTORATION OF PEATLANDS – but also logistics, local regulations, and social aspects.

In more detail, peat production for different purposes, substrate factories and package plants, powerplants, ports and shipping, peatland restoration, production regulation (certification) and safety, EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment), Estonian peat production licensing system, responsible peatland management and balancing different aspects and stakeholders interests will be introduced.

  • Port of Pärnu
  • Nurme Turvas package plant

Main highlights: licencing procedures and EIA, peat production technology, substrate production and packaging, peat logistics – handling in the port and shipping.

11.2 PÄRNU REGION

Main highlights: production technology, responsible peatland management, substrate production and packaging, peat logistics – handling in the port and shipping.

11.3 PÄRNU REGION

Main highlights: production of black peat, peatland restoration, peat and woodfuel usage in CHPs, district heating, packaging of different peat products.

11.4 PÄRNU REGION

  • Fortum Pärnu CHP (25 MWh)
  • Biolan Baltic production site and substrate factory

Main highlights: peat and wood-fuel usage in CHPs, district heating, development of new production site, substrate factory.

11.5 TALLINN REGION

  • Viimsi district heating powerplant (7 MWh)
  • Väo CHP (25 MWh)
  • Ahtol peat production site
  • Restoration of abandoned production site in Viru peatland

Main highlights: peat and wood-fuel usage in CHPs, district heating, peat production technologies, restoration of historic production sites.

11.6 HAAPSALU REGION

  • Kekkilä Eesti production site and substrate factory
  • Port of Rohuküla
  • Kuislemma production site

Main highlights: production technology, substrate production, logistics of peat products – handling in the port and shipping, responsible peatland management, balancing different land usages and interest groups, RHP certification.

Every proposed route will focus on some of the above-mentioned aspects, however, every route will
include visiting a peat production site. Please also pay attention to the duration of the excursion you choose, some of them are shorter and some longer – a detailed time schedule will be disclosed later, excursions in the Pärnu and Haapsalu region are full-day trips. None of the routes necessarily require rubber boots (if not stated otherwise), but during every excursion, some distances will be covered on foot.
